Deductions & exemptions — New Tax Regime
Standard deduction (salary/pension) of ₹75,000 (s. 16(ia)) is applied automatically when you have salary or pension income.

How the tax is computed

  1. Gross income = salary/pension + other income.
  2. Less deductions allowed in the chosen regime (standard deduction is automatic).
  3. Taxable income is rounded to the nearest ₹10 and taxed at slab rates.
  4. Rebate u/s 87A for residents (New regime: income up to ₹12 lakh, with marginal relief just above it; Old regime: up to ₹5 lakh).
  5. Surcharge above ₹50 lakh with marginal relief; then 4% health & education cess.

Old-regime basic exemption: ₹3 lakh for resident senior citizens (60–79) and ₹5 lakh for super senior citizens (80+).
