How the tax is computed
- Gross income = salary/pension + other income.
- Less deductions allowed in the chosen regime (standard deduction is automatic).
- Taxable income is rounded to the nearest ₹10 and taxed at slab rates.
- Rebate u/s 87A for residents (New regime: income up to ₹12 lakh, with marginal relief just above it; Old regime: up to ₹5 lakh).
- Surcharge above ₹50 lakh with marginal relief; then 4% health & education cess.

Old-regime basic exemption: ₹3 lakh for resident senior citizens (60–79) and ₹5 lakh for super senior citizens (80+).
